Dragging Bones – A Poem

Dragging Bones – Ezekiel 37:1-14
Bryan Davis

While looking East toward the dawn,
Old Joseph’s brethren waste away
While waiting for Messiah’s winds
To come and breathe new life their way

They suffer Egypt’s whip once more
The Law beats down the hopeless dream
They have his bones; old Joseph’s bones
But waiting there to be redeemed

Still in prison, still in chains
Feel the torture, feel the pain
Bowing low to feign obey
Dragging bones along the way

Then Moses brought another law
So simple, pure, in black and white
He strapped it on the brethren’s back
Was this Messiah’s saving light?

Then with the bones, old Joseph’s bones
They wandered downcast forty years
Cut off and dry, and beaten still
They died in sand and bitter tears

Still in prison, still in chains
Feel the torture, feel the pain
Bowing low to feign obey
Dragging bones along the way

With Joseph’s bones now buried deep
In Shechem’s fields of green landscapes
His brethren danced and drank their fill
Of milk and honey, figs and grapes

But judges ruled and then the kings
Enslaving men and killing priests
The bones of prophets now their train
And dirty hands soon spoil their feasts

Still in prison, still in chains
Feel the torture, feel the pain
Bowing low to feign obey
Dragging bones along the way

From out of Egypt comes their hope
He’s riding high on Joseph’s knee
Whose loins were sealed; but to the Lord
The maid submits so willingly

Old Joseph’s bones could not produce
Could not create the coming king
To rescue, save his brethren from
The whip, the chains, to freedom bring

Still in prison, still in chains
Feel the torture, feel the pain
Bowing low to feign obey
Dragging bones along the way

Proclaiming life the Savior breathes
The dead respond within the sea
Obtaining flesh and brand new hearts
Their bones unite and dance with glee

But many claim and call his name
And never leave old Egypt’s pods
Preferring still the whips and chains
Preferring Joseph’s bones to God’s

Still in prison, still in chains
Feel the torture, feel the pain
Bowing low to feign obey
Dragging bones along the way

  1. Wow that is powerful and deep
    I love it!

  2. How long did it take you to write this and the earlier poem “Joseph’s Choice”? They both are deep and complex. How did you get the idea for it/them?

  3. Great poem. I’ve noticed some of your poems are Bible related. Very deep.
