Writing Q&A Number 4

Question 4From Autumn:

Where did you have the Raising Dragons graphic novel printed?

The printer was Four Colour Print Group in Louisville, KY. The provide printing services overseas. The printing was actually done in South Korea where color printing is much cheaper.

What type of paper, binding, etc. did you choose for the graphic novel and why?

The paper is 100 grams per square meter, 70 pound, white wood-free, offset paper.

The cover is 250 grams per square meter, 11 point artboard with gloss film lamination.

The binding is perfect bound with drawn-on scored and hinged cover.

I went with these specifications because the printer recommended them.

Did you have to get permission from the publisher of the Dragons In Our Midst series before you self published the Raising Dragons graphic novel?

When it comes to rights, the contract is key to everything. My contract with AMG Publishers said nothing about a graphic novel, so I was free to publish it myself. I asked AMG if they wanted to publish it, and they declined. My hope was that going with a traditional publisher would give the graphic novel a better standing of legitimacy, but it didn’t work out.

In any case, I think it came out great. 🙂

If anyone has ideas to add, be sure to comment, and if you have a question you would like to see addressed here, then send it to blogqa@daviscrossing.com.

  1. Awesome, thank you very much 🙂

I just thought of something as well. You may consider putting the graphic novel on Taptastic and/or Comixology for a little more exposure and another source of money from the graphic novel.
